The Turkish get-up (TGU) is the proverbial knot that ties competence, strength and integrity of the body into one complete package. TGUs are great for upper and lower body stabilization. They link one half of the body to the other. This connection comes into play during running/sprinting so that, for instance, ‘driving and pulling’ the right arm drives and pulls the left leg (during strides), and vice versa. TGUs also stimulate the visual system because you have to focus on the bell during the first few stages of the movement. This provides a strong connection of mind/body focus and ingrains neural-muscular control that will translate into improvement in other lifts and activities (e.g. sports) outside of the gym.
