A while back I asked Coach Jenn Vinges to help us develop a recovery centric program at TheLIFTGym.
Because Jenn is an incredible instructor in the practice of yoga…I knew she would come through.
And she has!
Rebound30 is a thirty minute recovery & rejuvenation session that is designed to help you tap into a very important part of
your nervous system called the parasympathetic nervous system.
Science Daily describes this system as one of three divisions of the autonomic nervous system. Sometimes called the rest and digest system, the parasympathetic system conserves energy as it slows the heart rate, increases intestinal and gland activity, and relaxes the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract
Effectively the parasympathetic nervous system is in direct contrast of what we exercise enthusiasts ‘enjoy’ living in…the sympathetic nervous system or what’s also known as Fight or Flight.
Now the sympathetic system is what your nervous system switches on to when you are putting a considerable and sometimes all out effort to produce a response.
These responses may range from building muscle, to increases in strength, to prepare for sport or to test your conditioning through a high intensity workout where your heart is racing in redline and your lungs feel like they’re about to collapse.
In these above examples the sympathetic system is in full effect and in turn exploit your body’s way of dealing with the fight or flight opportunities
that are really necessary for survival.
All things considered we need to go to flight or flight. But to be in that mode (fight or flight) with great frequency is not always good nor necessary.
Even though it may seem like a productive place to go in the gym, we can’t ‘live’ there too often. Add on to the stress of seemingly tough workouts 3-4 days per week and the stresses of just everyday life…i.e. kids college tuition, job deadlines, bickering with a friend or spouse, paying the rent or mortgage, bills, …we can easily find ourselves in a self-defeating cycle where insidious mental and physical breakdown seemingly sneak up on us and begins to take a toll.
For those reasons we just knew we had to create a program that would help teach the skill of getting calm and out of the fight or flight cycle while exploiting the benefits of our other side…the rest, digest, recover stuff (parasympathetic).
RB30 is our proprietary skill teaching tool designed to help you self assess your mental and physical state. Then, with the guidance through our 7 point flow sequence you begin to unleash your ability to shut down the ‘stress and noise’ of the day while giving yourself the opportunity to re-connect your body and mind to a state of calm and rejuvenation.
Makes sense to go there, right?
You see, if you do not allow your body and mind (they are really ‘one piece’) to spend time in a state of recovery and replenishment, then you will never truly replete the very resources that are available to help make you better from all the stuff that is supposed to help get you better.
For many…more exercise…more stress…more getting after it…is not what’s necessarily needed.
Many times what most of us need is a little less ‘pounding’ and a bit more ‘rebound-ing’
