Does Your Belly ‘Hurt’ Every Time You Eat A Sweet Potato?

Here’s Why…

Sweet Potatoes Contain Mannitol…

Mannitol belongs to the polyol, or sugar alcohol family. Sugar alcohols, such as sorbitol, xylitol, maltitol and mannitol, are often added to sugar-free ice cream, sugar-free candy and other sugar-free foods because they contain fewer calories and sugar compared with regular table sugar. Some foods also naturally contain small amounts of mannitol, such as sweet potatoes, cauliflower, mushrooms, snow peas, watermelon and celery. Some people do not tolerate some types of sugar alcohols well and might experience gastrointestinal problems as a result.

Remedy: Eat white potato instead. White potatoes do not contain the sugar alcohol Mannitol. And don’t worry about it being a ‘white’ potato. It still has some nutritional value. And remember that you’re basically eating it because of it’s available starch that will help replete some of the muscle glycogen vaporized during that brutally tough squat/prowler session.
